Google News: Ecosystems shift as climate changes

Ecosystems shift as climate changes Posted on December 19, 2011 - 09:23 by Kate Taylor Tweet Email Share By 2100, nearly 40 percent of land-based ecosystems - forest, grassland or tundra, for example - will have moved from one type to another. According to a modeling study from NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory and the California Institute of Technology, global climate change will modify plant communities covering almost half of Earth's land surface. The projections indicate that many plant and animal species face increasing competition for survival. Most land that's not covered by ice or desert is projected to undergo at least a 30 percent change in plant cover - meaning humans and animals will need to adapt and often relocate. "For more than 25 years, scientists have warned of the dangers of human-induced climate change," says Caltech scientist Jon Bergengren. "While warnings of melting glaciers, rising sea levels and other environmental changes are illustrative and important, ult

Google News: Belgian Suicide Attacker With Grenades Kills 5, Wounds 132

Google News

Dec. 14 (Bloomberg) -- A suicide attacker in the Belgian city of Liege tossed grenades into a crowd and then sprayed it with bullets, leaving at least five people dead including a 17- month-old toddler. At least 132 were wounded in yesterday's assault at a bus stop, according to preliminary official figures. The dead also included "a 15-year-old -- a young boy who died on the spot --a 17-year-old and a 75-year-old woman," city prosecutor Daniele Reynders said in a televised press conference. A fifth fatality, a 17-month-old toddler, was confirmed by Eddy Lambert, spokesman for CHC hospital in Liege. The 33-year-old assailant, Nordine Amrani, who fatally shot himself, had been convicted on arms and drugs charges, Reynders said, adding that he had never been charged with terrorism. An inquiry will determine if the attack was premeditated, Reynders said. European Union President Herman Van Rompuy said he is "completely overwhelmed" by the "atrocious murders" in Liege. Google News: Jamaica and the world economy

Google News

Jamaica And The World Economy Published: Monday | December 12, 20111 Comment by John Rapley In recent weeks, I've written several columns about the latest wave of the financial crisis, which is the sovereign-debt crisis in Europe. After weeks of panic and drama, two fallen governments, sweeping measures and behind-the-scenes prodding by the United States, the situation for the moment seems to have been stabilised. It's been one storm after another, and like any storm, most of us can only hunker down until it blows past. Then we re-emerge into the light of day to assess the damage. And the landscape we're seeing out there is pretty bleak. If anyone in Jamaica is still hoping we can find our way on to a solid growth path by simply riding the tide of a rising world economy, it's time to pack in that dream. Europe has announced that it will barely grow this year. Britain reckons it will take several years before it can repair the damage of the great recession. The US is showing comparat

Google News: Israeli warplanes fly over Lebanon after rocket fired in south

Google News

Lebanon: Israeli warplanes flew over south Lebanon, the Bekaa Valley and Beirut Monday morning after a woman was wounded in the south when a Katyusha rocket, apparently aimed at Israel, hit her home. A security source told The Daily Star that four Israeli jets flew at high altitude between 9:30 a.m. and 10:00 a.m. Monday over villages in the Bint Jbeil border area in south Lebanon and the Bekaa Valley in the east before hovering in circles over the capital. Naseera Ali Abbas, 55, was wounded in various parts of her body, including seriously in her leg, when a rocket penetrated the ceiling and landed in the bedroom of her house in the border town of Houla shortly before midnight, the source said. Her seven-year-old son, who was sleeping in bed with her, was unscathed, added the source, who spoke to The Daily Star on condition of anonymity. A Lebanese Army statement said a rocket fired from the outskirts of the town of Majdal Silm hit a house in Houla in the Marjayoun region at 11:00

Google News: The European debt crisis in eight graphs

Google News

The European debt crisis in eight graphs By Ezra Klein and Sarah Kliff, Updated: Thursday, December 1, 11:51 AM The European debt crisis can easily feel like an unwieldy, unmanageable mess of complex jargon and financial terms. Here's Wonkblog's explanation of what's happening across the Atlantic Ocean with the help of eight key graphs: The place to start with the European debt crisis is, well, with European debt. Put simply, the crisis in the euro zone is that the market doesn't trust that Greece, Italy, Spain, Ireland and Portugal can pay back their debts, and so they don't want to lend them more money except at exorbitant rates. But to understand how Europe got into this mess, how countries like Greece managed to borrow so much money that they couldn't pay it all back, you need to see this graph from the Organization for Economic Development and Cooperation (OECD). On the right side, you're seeing the story everyone already knows: The market is charging Southern European countri
