Google News: US Stock Futures Lean Lower Ahead Of Economic Data

Google News

NEW YORK (Dow Jones)--U.S. stock futures leaned lower Tuesday following the previous session's fourth biggest rally of the year, as investors moved cautiously ahead of housing data, consumer confidence figures and the minutes of the latest Fed meeting. Dow Jones Industrial Average futures dropped 53 points, or 0.5%, to 11464. The blue-chip index is coming off a 255-point gain on Monday, aided by relief that Hurricane Irene wasn't as damaging as initially expected. Standard & Poor's 500-stock index futures slumped 7 points, or 0.6%, to 1201. Nasdaq 100 futures fell 8 points, or 0.4%, to 2212. Changes in stock futures don't always accurately predict stock moves after the opening bell.

Avoiding United States Depression

The Federal Reserve is attempting to head off a depression by providing  $1.2 trillion in money to banks from August 2007 through April 2010.

The bankruptcy of Lehman Brothers Holdings Inc. in September 2008 triggered losses at the world's oldest money market mutual fund.

About  Oct. 1, 2008, the feds had $152.1 billion of loans outstanding.

Three weeks after Lehman Brothers collapsed, companies financed themselves by selling commercial paper  bonds with a maturity of 270 days or less.  For the simple reason that these are considered the safest, because of their relatively short terms. The problem is these bonds were frozen out of the market. The Fed unveiled the Commercial Paper Funding Facility, or CPFF, on Oct. 7, 2008, to "help provide liquidity to term funding markets."  DUH!

When the program began, banks including Citigroup Inc., Bank of America Corp. and Switzerland's UBS AG participated.

Because non-banks usually are not eligible to borrow from the Fed, central-bank officials had to invoke Section 13(3) of the Federal Reserve law, which allows such loans "in unusual and exigent circumstances."

By January 2009, the Fed had bought $348 billion of commercial paper.

The Federal Reserve was created in 1913 after finical panics in the late 1800's. The main idea of the newly formed Federal Reserve was to head off crises ( uncontrollable inflation or depression) through the use of a discount window.  A lending program that could supply institutions ( Banks and other entities) with cash if customers rushed to withdraw more money than banks had on hand.

The Stock Market

The Great Depression has many similarities to the market now.   Some will say we cannot have another crash as then because of safety methods put in by government regulators.  Ha, have you ever heard of having an insurance policy on a business failure, without the regulations of a State Insurance Commissioner?  How about a credit default swap?

History; the stock market peaked in August 1929 and hit bottom three years later, June 17, 1932.
The market lost 83%.

The market did not  decline in a straight line after the 1929 crash. Instead, it fell slowly in a almost rhythmical sequence. After dropping by 31% at the end of 1929 the market went up 18% by March 1930, this continued till the end in 1934.

The market continued to fluctuate for almost ten years, continuing to move up.
Investors who bought  at the 1929 peak had to wait until January 1945 to regain their losses.

Look at today's Market and see the similarities.

Is it really that bad

Are you really saving for your retirement?  The Political Systems in the World are not looking so good. Europe cannot get a foot hold on its economic problems.  The United States is at a loss for another technique which will effectively 'Boost' the economy out of recession.  France and Germany are working toward a Union of European Political and Monetary agreement which will effectively congeal the Governments into one single entity.  Historically this has happened before.  With modern communications we now see it happening.
